Koufonisia is strongest when beaches are read as a sequence rather than as isolated names. Ammos starts the mood, Fanos and Finikas carry the middle, Italida and Pori reward the long eastward move, and Kato Koufonisi only enters the plan when you want a separate boat-shaped day rather than more items on the same checklist.

Ammos is the soft landing beach, not the whole day
Ammos by the harbour is useful because it removes pressure from arrival day and gives you an easy first swim. Treat it as a reset that lets the island open slowly rather than as the main beach objective.

Fanos and Finikas make the east-coast chain feel coherent
These are the places that turn the walk east of Chora into an actual plan for the day. They matter less as trophies and more as connected pauses that make Koufonisia feel naturally walkable.
3
Italida and Pori deserve the committed eastward push
The outer part of the coast works best when you allow enough time and energy for it. Pori is the wide scenic payoff; Italida sits better as part of that same commitment rather than as a random stop between rides and boats.
4
Kato Koufonisi is the extra beach guide only when the day belongs to the boat
Kato does not exist to complete a checklist. It matters when you want a quieter, more marine day with extra coves and distance from the village life of Ano.
Useful details before you set out
ℹ
Put Finikas before Fanos on the coastal walk
From Chora, the coastal route passes Harokopou, also called Finikas, then Fanos, Platia Pounta / Italida and Pori. The local guide gives about 3.5 km one way to Pori. Add stops and the return; bring water, sun protection and shoes suited to the rocky sections.
Pori can become choppy in strong northerly winds. The local guide describes Finikas as sheltered from northerlies and Fanos from north and west winds. These are relative shelter descriptions, so check the actual sea before swimming. Seasonal food service and boat departures need separate confirmation.
Walk earlier, settle into one real lunch stop, then let the coast narrow again on the return.
Do not try to cover the full east-coast chain and a proper Kato boat day on the same day.
If the wind or your energy argues against Pori, shortening the chain is usually smarter than forcing completion.
How this page was checked
This page is based on the fixed walkable east-coast chain from Chora toward Pori, plus the stable role of Kato Koufonisi as the boat-led extension rather than the default continuation of the same shoreline day.
Water access, boat availability, wind exposure and exact beach service levels can shift through the season, so check those changeable details separately before you lock anything in.
Build one clear coast day instead of chasing every beach name
Koufonisia becomes much stronger when the beaches are treated as one eastward sequence on Ano, with Kato saved for the separate day that truly deserves the boat.
Stable island geography is kept separate from boat services, sea conditions and opening details that may change sooner.
