Best for arrival ease and a first visit
Chora and harbour
The ferry, food and evening options stay close; repeated east-coast beach time requires more walking or local transport.
Compare Chora-area staysKoufonisia becomes easier to read once you understand the island pair: arrival happens on inhabited Ano Koufonisi, Chora sits by the harbour, the road runs east toward Pori, and Kato Koufonisi is added by boat.
Stay decision
Chora and the harbour give the simplest first stay. An east-side base works when repeated walks or rides toward Finikas and Pori matter more than immediate port access.
Some accommodation links may be monetized through Stay22. The shortlist follows ferry arrival and walking distances, not partner payout; verify transfers, prices and cancellation terms.

Compare Chora-area staysBest for beach-led days
The east-coast beaches sit closer, while ferry handling and spontaneous Chora evenings become less direct.
Compare east-side staysKoufonisia refers to Ano and Kato Koufonisi, separated by a narrow strait, so the first thing to understand is that the destination is naturally split in two.
Ano, or Pano, Koufonisi is the inhabited island and the place where ferry arrival, rooms, Chora and most first-day logistics all come together.
Live routes and trip times can change, but the practical point is stable: the sea connection sets the pace of the trip, especially on arrival and departure days.
You arrive almost directly into the social center of the island, so orientation is unusually easy from the first hour compared with larger Cycladic islands.
Once you know the eastward route to Pori and how boats reach Kato Koufonisi, the rest of the island map becomes simple.
Blue Star Ferries lists the Piraeus connection and directs passengers to booking for departure times. Check the actual vessel, date, journey length and arrival on Ano Koufonisi. When connecting through Naxos, allow time between the inbound journey, port transfer and onward ferry; the local beach boats are a separate service.
For Monday–Saturday, the published Naxos departure is 14:30 with Koufonisi arrival 17:05 through 13 September 2026; from 14 September–31 October it is 14:00–16:35. Morning departures from Koufonisi vary by weekday and period. The summer Sunday table serves a different route. Confirm your sailing with the operator.

Live ferry schedules, operator changes and boat services can shift, so verify those separately before travel.
Once those three pieces are in place, Koufonisia becomes one of the easiest island maps in the Cyclades to read well.
Stable island geography is kept separate from boat services, sea conditions and opening details that may change sooner.
Destination, heritage, food and walking references were read. The guide retains its local observations and travel recommendations. Confirm changing services for your travel dates.
The review covers the published references and the practical details below. Individual businesses and present conditions on the ground need their own checks.
Ferry times, local boats, sea state, seasonal food service and opening hours can change faster than the islands' geography.
